At this time of year most of the world observes the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. The observance was called for by the UN General Assembly on December 2, 1977, to commemorate the adoption of Resolution 181 on November 29, 1947, which recommended the partition of Palestine leading to the Nakba ("catastrophe" in Arabic). This month, the UN General Assembly also votes on a list of 16 standing resolutions calling for peace and human rights in Israel-Palestine.
