Lettre ouverte des universitaires canadien-ne-s sur la définition de l’antisémitisme selon l’IHRA

Plus de 300 universitaires canadien-ne-s ont signé une lettre ouverte s’opposant à la définition de l’antisémitisme de l’IHRA (International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance). Nous, membres de la collectivité universitaire canadienne et signataires de la présente pétition, déclarons que nous nous opposons à ce que les universités et autres organismes publics du Canada adoptent la définition de travail de l’antisémitisme formulée par l’Alliance internationale pour la mémoire de l’Holocauste (IHRA).


L’antisémitisme est une menace concrète et de plus en plus mortelle pour les Juifs et les Juives. Nous ne croyons toutefois pas que l’adoption de cette définition puisse contribuer à vaincre cette forme insidieuse de haine. La définition de l’IHRA, que le gouvernement canadien a récemment fait sienne, est formulée de manière à délibérément assimiler à de l’antisémitisme les critiques légitimes à l’endroit d’Israël et la défense des droits des Palestiniens. Cette confusion nuit à la fois à la lutte des Palestinien·ne·s pour la liberté, la justice et l’égalité et à la lutte mondiale contre l’antisémitisme. Elle sert aussi à protéger Israël de toute obligation de rendre des comptes à l’aune des normes internationales en matière de droits de la personne et au regard des prescriptions du droit international. Nous croyons qu’en adoptant la définition de l’antisémitisme proposée par l’IHRA, les universités canadiennes verraient un « climat de frilosité » s’installer en leur sein, tant au plan de l’enseignement que de la recherche et du militantisme autour des enjeux touchant Israël et la Palestine. Nous demandons à tous ceux et celles qui valorisent les débats francs et ouverts et la liberté de penser et d’enseigner de rejeter cette définition qui mettrait en péril la recherche de la vérité et l’expression légitime de la dissidence.
